NYC Shooting Outside Empire State Building

As of this writing, police say eight people have been shot in the vicinity of 5th Ave and 34th Street, right outside the Empire State Building.  We have confirmation that the shooter is dead and word that up to two of the shooting victims may also be dead.

I am chilled to the bone, I walk past this corner at 9 am, the time of the incident, every day of the week on my way to my 5th Avenue office from Penn Station.  Today I am working from home, otherwise I’d have been on or around that block during the shooting for sure.

I’m kind of speechless and of course hoping for the best for those who were caught in the gun fire. I would say this kind of thing is unimaginable, but between this, the movie theater thing in Colorado and the Summer of Homicides currently underway in Chicago, it feels as though the pace and severity of gun violence is hitting a fever pitch right now.
