I don't much feel like talking finance and markets this morning.
The tragedy that took place at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado while most of us were sleeping is quite a thing to wake up to. A lone 24-year-old gunman wearing a gas mask made his way through a multiplex with an AK 47, a handgun, a rifle and tear gas at a midnight showing of the new Batman film. Witnesses say he stood in front of the screen facing the audience and began randomly pumping bullets into theatergoers, including children as young as 6 and 9.
I don't quite know what to say. Or why I should feel the need to say anything at all. Maybe there's nothing to say right now except how heartbreaking and frightening it is.
I'm am floored by this atrocity, the randomness of it and the sheer amount of destruction. Lives lost, psychic wounds that will last forever, families shattered. I just can't quite get past it.
In a day or two, the gun control people will scream about the presence of an AK 47 as proof that the situation is out of control. Then the gun nuts will use this to make the case that everyone needs to be armed at all times and in all venues. I don't know who's right or wrong anymore, but it will be sickening to hear the debate against this backrop.
