The Student Loan Bubble, Illustrated

This is just a grotesque twisting of what the higher education system was supposed to be for America’s youth.  It’s turned college into feudalistic system of peasants working the land at their lords’ pleasure just to keep their heads above water.  No one put a gun to anyone’s head to take a student loan, but with tuition climbing, many people have no choice if they wish to better themselves.

Some stats via Mother Jones:

Below, tuitions from 200 to 2009 (in thousands)

Below, a visualization of today’s student debt load versus the one a decade ago

Finally, the most telling, student loan debt has just crossed above credit card debt in America for the first time ever
