Even if you knew the ending direction with absolute certainty the intraday moves are murder - even without HFT I think decimals have probably destroyed the stop placement myth but in the days of fractions it was absolutely true. Eighths were the place to be and which ones worked best was different for highs and lows when I ran all the histograms years ago. My own superstition: Never trade on a Fed day.
