I honestly don't think too much has changed, from the extremely limited set of data from which I'm jumping to that conclusion. Sure, in some social circles/scenes its passe but chances are many of those in such circles aren't worth convincing that you're not an evil capitalist pig, let alone trying to go home/make friends with.
